insects and 2 flowers on the entire continent?

Let's Celebrate!
Double congratulations to Pete who celebrates a birthday AND an anniversary (#59) this week.
Also celebrating an anniversary this week are Richard and Ginnie, married 32 years on October 6th.
Ribbon Cuttings
We had two ribbon cuttings this past week. One at a homeless shelter
in South San Jose and the other at a battered women's shelter in
Sunnyvale. The ribbon cuttings were for the new bookcases filled
with reading materials that we donated to both of these organizations.
We know the kids will love reading their new books and hope they bring
some joy into their lives at this difficult time for them and their families.
Happy/Sad Dollars
Kristin put in a thankful dollar. Her cat got sick and it required a lot of money to make it better. She was thankful to have a husband who could pay the bill.
Clark was understandably happy that his tumor stopped bleeding before he had to undergo surgery.
Doug added a dollar because he's happy the Sharks are playing again.
Jim was sad as he added a buck to the pot because the 49ers lost.
Fenton put in a sad dollar because he was late today. He did something to his foot and had to have it x-rayed to see if it's broken.
Joker - Joker
Nick took $4 from the pot following his Joker-Joker draw this afternoon.
Out 'n About
The holder of the fine-free badge for September, Jim, just returned from a fishing trip to Oregon. He also announced that he recently attended his 50th reunion at Mtn. View High School.
Fine-Free Badge
Clark is now the proud owner of October's fine-free badge. It cost a mere $10 for him to win it.

Did You Know.....???????
That bored Royal Air Force pilots stationed on the Falkland Islands have devised what they consider a marvelous new game. Noting that the local penguins are fascinated by airplanes, the pilots search out a beach where the birds are gathered and fly slowly along it at the waters edge. Perhaps ten thousand penguins turn their heads in unison watching the planes go by, and when the pilots turn around and fly back, the birds turn their heads in the opposite direction, like spectators at a slow-motion tennis match. Then, the pilots fly directly to the penguin colony and over-fly it. Heads go up, up, up, and ten thousand penguins fall over gently onto their backs.
